Film Tax Incentives get Movies Made in (YOUR STATE HERE)

(CNN) -- "The Blind Side" could have been filmed anywhere, says Tim Bourne, an independent producer who worked on the film. But there's a reason producers brought the project to Georgia: money.

"There's nothing in [the movie] that couldn't have been shot in any midrange urban setting. The reason, and the sole reason, it was shot in Georgia was the tax incentives," he said.

Georgia boasts one of the highest tax credits in the United States: a 20 percent base tax credit, with an additional 10 percent if a Georgia logo appears somewhere in the project. The Oscar-nominated "Blind Side" is one of many films that's taken advantage of the incentives to shoot in the Empire State of the South, incentives that also include a diverse set of locations, state-of-the-art facilities and large production crews.

Showing OFF Nebraska filmmakers to share spotlight at 2010 Omaha Film Festival (Omaha City Weekly)

By: Michael Joe Krainak
Issue: 7.04

Hollywood and indie filmmakers, several with Nebraska roots and ties, will once again be the main attraction at the fifth annual Omaha Film Festival and Conference, which opens this weekend and continues through March 14.

The filmmakers conference, held at Creighton University March 6-7 will feature such panelists as Omahan actor Chris Klein and writer/director Brian Miller of Klein’s current film, “Caught in the Crossfire.” Other notable speakers offering advice will include Oscar-winning editor Mike Hill, writer Dan Petrie, Jr., director Donald Petrie, writer/director Nik Fackler and producer Dana Altman.

Part 1: “In The Darkness” team: pioneers on ‘the verge of madness’

In The Darkness is not your average feature film release. Bypassing all traditional distribution routes, the team behind the film is ready to embrace the digital age through the online-only launch on Hulu.com. The film is the second release from “April Showers” director Andrew Robinson and producer Jenna Edwards through their new production company Mattoid Entertainment.

This is Hulu’s first exclusive film launch, which, if successful, could change the game in film distribution and marketing. Showcasing a feature-length film premiere online, for free, is unprecedented at this scale.

“During the [release] of “April Showers,” I learned a lot about distribution,” said producer Jenna Edwards. “Other platforms can be expensive and the returns are not always that good. Film marketing in general has changed so much that you can’t really just be ‘just a filmmaker’ anymore. You also have to take charge of the distribution and marketing of your film.”

Visit by Klein points up festival's growth- OWH article on OFF 2010

Chris Klein is coming home for the Omaha Film Festival next weekend, and he's bringing his latest director with him.

Klein, a native Omahan, is emblematic of why the festival continues to grow in popularity as its fifth year of events kicks off Saturday.

“I like the local flavor of the whole thing,” said Mark Kresl of Omaha, who has attended every festival. “Andrew Robinson's movie (‘Shimmer') drew me the first year. Now the Nebraska short films are my favorite part. It reminds you there are a lot of talented people making films who are homegrown.”

Robinson, an Omaha native, has made two more feature films since then.

Blood Rites - low budget horror movie - shooting this Spring in Lincoln, NE

Heavily influenced by Giallo, a genre of Italian horror popularized in the late 60’s and 70’s by masters like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, Blood Rites is a macabre mystery of murder, drug use and the occult. A drug deal has gone horribly wrong. Nicky, a young woman on the wrong side of the law, finds herself trapped in a secluded warehouse with a sociopathic ex-soldier, a violently unstable drug user, a dying gunshot victim and a handful of religious zealots. Something unnatural is happening. A demon wants to be born and that can only happen with a sacrifice of blood.

This is the second feature produced by Unfiltered Entertainment, Inc. Our previous project, "Wake the Witch", is being picked up for video on demand distribution. Please visit our websites - www.unfiltered-ent.com and www.wakethewitchmovie.com - for more information.

Pecha Kucha uniquely presents Lincoln’s visual arts community- Daily Nebraskan

By Casey Welsch
Japan is known for producing some pretty strange stuff in the realm of the visual arts. Strange at least by our culture’s viewpoint.

However, there is a particular visual arts movement that is taking America by storm; it’s called Pecha Kucha.

Pecha Kucha’s name comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia for “chit chat,” and that’s kind of what the movement is all about. It is not so much a style as it is an event.

Started in 2003 in Tokyo, Pecha Kucha nights are events that bring designers and creative professionals together under a simple premise: Each presenter gets 20 images and 20 seconds to talk about each image to make a point and spark discussion.

From its beginnings in Tokyo, the seasonal events have spread to 280 cities worldwide. Each successive event brings more and more interested presenters and attendees. Now Pecha Kucha is coming to Lincoln.
