State Theatre lives again with new life, owners

The old State Theatre building at 1415 O St. is getting another chance.
Late last week, some business owners signed a lease on the building, with the aim of re-opening it as a movie theater and concert venue.
The Bourbon Theatre is a partnership between Box Awesome owners Jeremiah and Leah Moore and Kinetic Brew owners Brian Walsh and Jeremy Furrow. The coffee shop stayed open in the O Street building after the State Theatre closed last fall.
The Kinetic Brew guys will launch the movie side of the business with a Homegrown Film Festival at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 3. The festival, which will be free, will spotlight short films by local filmmakers.
For Box Awesome, Bourbon Theatre will be an expansion venue for local and national music acts that draw larger crowds than the bar at 815 O St. can handle. Box Awesome will continue to offer entertainment as well.
Various ventures have been tried in the old State Theatre over the years, but with varying success.
“At Box Awesome,” said Jeremiah Moore, “basically we’ve been building up connections with different agents and bands. And we’re going to utilize some of those contacts with this bigger space.”
The new venue will start hosting concerts in mid-May with indie rock and electronica acts.
Bourbon Theatre will launch its series of music acts with a new sound system and a bar of bourbon whiskey selection that the owners said will rival anywhere else in town.
Moore said he’s lost concerts to Omaha in the past because Box Awesome is too small. With the expansion, that should no longer be a problem, he said.
“We want to make Lincoln another stop on the way for these touring bands,” he said. “I’m quite excited.”
A full schedule isn’t up yet, but following the Homegrown Film Festival, Bourbon Theatre will show a few older movies, including “The Neverending Story,” “The Dark Crystal” and “Up In Smoke.”
Bourbon Theatre’s first concert will be the live electronica of Bassnectar on May 22.
