Upcoming Movie Made in Nebraska Depicts Columbine Shootings: KPTM

OMAHA (KPTM)- Hard to believe, but Monday marks the ten year anniversary of the shootings at Columbine High School, and this Friday, millions will re-live that day at movie theatres across the country with the opening of the film, "April Showers" - a movie shot right here in Nebraska.

It was the story that shocked a nation, two high school students shooting and killing 12 of their classmates, one teacher, and injuring two dozen. Now, ten years later, Andrew Robinson, a survivor of the Columbine shootings is bringing his experience to the big screen with "April Showers," a movie shot in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, with the help of actors right here in Omaha - four of which, we sat down with.

Jenny: What does April 20th mean to you guys now? After being in it [the movie]? "For me, it's pretty much changed my life," said Bryan McClure, a Creighton University graduate, and "April Showers" cast member.

"Everyone from the cast, crew, directors, felt like they were doing something important - that people would be impacted by," said Bill Grennan, another Creighton University graduate, and "April Showers" cast member.

Jenny: Talk to me about shooting in Plattsmouth - far cry from a Hollywood set - talk to me about this. "They were really accommodating. The students got involved. They were still in school a lot of the time we were filming," said Ben Chrystak, an "April Showers" cast member. "They didn't have very much of a budget for the film at all, but one thing after another kept working out," said McClure.

"The extras were a big part of this movie because there were hundreds and hundreds of extras," said Grennan. "It had something magical about it - the whole project really did," said Rachel Lien, an "April Showers" cast member.

Jenny: This seems like the "Little Engine that Could" - what are your hopes for this movie? Do you think it'll take off? "We want to be a part of something that will spark thought, conversation. Find a way to make things better - if we do that the film will be a success," said Grennan. "It can only better the world. Honestly, the movie can only better the world," said Lien.

Next month, all four cast members will be leaving Omaha and moving to Los Angeles to pursue their acting careers. Most of the proceeds from the movie will go to charity.
